Growing public concern over drug shortages has led to proposed
legislation that would require drugmakers to give the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) advance warning of pending shortages. Supporters
say the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act,
which is currently under consideration by a Senate committee, would
enable FDA to alert hospitals and healthcare providers in advance so
they could make provisions. “It minimizes the pressure that is on
pharmacists, doctors and other healthcare providers and increases
manufacturer accountability,” said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) this
week, speaking at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
