I have to agree UMDNS is free to use and, in my opinion, has an "easier to use" structure than the GMDN system. Small manufacturers can find access charges to GMDN disproportionate to their business.
GMDN is a nice idea, but I consider the business model fundamentally flawed. If you want true universality and consistency it has to be free to use. Too often I see manufacturers who have bought limit access and then tried to classify (or rather mis-classify) a diverse product line within the limited yet expensive access area.
