  • 1.  EU Battery Directive (2006/66/EC) - local implementation?

    Posted 15-Jan-2014 05:04
As I understand it, the EU Battery Directive is not a CE-mark or free-trade directive. Therefore, it tells national / local environmental agencies what to achieve, but not how to achieve it, so each locality may implement different solutions for battery disposal. I'm trying to discover where I can start to research the various requirements around the EU for disposal of a single use disposable device (with a battery). It will be a biohazard which must be disposed of in a sharps container, but I understand that some localities may require that the battery be removed before incineration (and the battery is not designed to be removable!). So I'm looking for sources of information about different disposal schemes around the EU, and whether the manufacturer might be required to take back all used devices.

    Thanks for any ideas.

The EC's environment page is a good place to start looking. You'll find info on the competent authority in several Member States and links to battery associations. Please see link below:

    Good luck.
