  • 1.  ISO 13485:2016 Handbook

    Posted 05-Jan-2017 17:00

ISO published ISO 13485:2016 on March 1, 2016. I had understood that ISO TC210 would publish a handbook by the end of 2016 to explain some of the changes, offer implementation strategies, etc.

I checked to ISO website for 13485 and did not see the handbook as either published or under development. (There is a 12 page document that doesn’t provide implementation details.)

I check the TC 210 website for their work program and did not see the handbook as either published or under development.

Have I misunderstood the plan to publish a handbook? If not, can somebody provide a status and expected publication date?

    Hi Dan,

as far as I know the Handbook is still in a draft form and is being circulated to all technical committee (TC210) P-members for a Committee Internal Ballot (CIB) to determine whether this handbook should be provided to the ISO Technical Management Board (TMB). I don't know anything about a publication date.

    Dears,

The Handbook is still under development and not yet fully finished.

The issue is that new ISO Version will have to be revised after the new medical device regulations in Europe coming into force mid this year.

I assume that the guidance will have to be revised as well and that therefore it is not finalized.

    Kind regards

    Andreas

Thank you for the update on the handbook.

Andreas said, “The issue is that new ISO Version will have to be revised after the new medical device regulations in Europe coming into force mid this year.” I’m confused by that. The EU has published a version, through annexes, that shows the differences between the international version and the directives. For example, EN ISO 13485:2016 has a series of annexes that explain the differences between the quality requirements in the conformity assessment paths and the international version, ISO 13485:2016.

Has TC 210 adopted the position that it will change the international QMS standard for changes in national and regional regulations?

I should have added that I expected to see EN ISO 13485:2017 to provide information related to the new directives.

I do not expect ISO 13485:2016 to change.

I also anticipated that CEN would adopt the ISO TC210 handbook, make it a EN, and provide additional information for the directives.

    Dan,

The document is out for review and vote by national committees and should be released soon. I have had the opportunity to review it as a member of the US National committee and I believe they have done a good job in producing a useful document. The document was done as a handbook to reduce the time and other limitations of ISO in releasing documents.

    Hi Dan,

The following is my understanding regarding the ISO 13485 Handbook.

A team of experts from ISOTC 210 WG1 have since the publication of ISO 13485:2016 in March 2016 worked through the remainder of 2016 to compile a Handbook, the drafting has been completed and the finalized text was circulated to ISOTC 210 (P)-members for a Committee Internal Ballot (CIB) in order to determine if this document should be provided to ISO Technical Management Board for publication as a marketing document.

The closing date for the ballot is the 21st February 2017, following closure the drafting team will review any comments and deal with as appropriate, publication date is planned for late 1st qtr/early 2nd qtr 2017.

    Paul and Ed

Thank you very much for the information about the handbook. I’m sure others in the group are interested in the status of the handbook.

    Dear Dan,

The draft was circulated december 20 to all technical committee (TC210) P-members for a Committee Internal Ballot (CIB) to determine whether this handbook should be provided to the ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) for publication. Committee members will now accept or vote "No" along with improvement proposals. Closure of the CIB is expected February 21 th, 2017.

    Then the work process continues....
