Any NB recommendations for a small medical device company in the structural heart space?

    Thank you, Chris

    Chris,
I will say that it depends on several things - 1) where your product is development wise and whether you have fully commercialized products or only in development stages (IE full 13485 implemented) as well as your geographic commercial intentions (US, EU, Global).

BSI is a reasonable starting point - that, depending on managers / contacts - are helpful with smaller companies.

    Hello Chris,

Some Notified Bodies are not taking on new clients, so 1) contact a Notified Body to get a quote, 2) get a Notified Body who will perform the audit/Tech Doc review, and 3) what is the price for your endeavour, and 4) make sure it aligns with your entry time onto the market.

    Hi Chris,

I would like to add to the simple but excellent comment of Richard to also assure that you select a notified body which is accredited for your type of product. Not all notified bodies can assess all product categories. NANDO for medical devices

While I can't speak to the structural heart aspect, I can add a few notes:

    - As you're at a small med device company, you may be cost conscious. I've used Intertek before and their prices were reasonable. My last company liked using them because we also used their testing lab which is in Boxborough, MA (noticed you're in MA so I'm pointing that out).
    - At one point I got a quote from TUV SUD. I've heard they're very thorough and they had up-to-date information available on new regulations, but their prices were too high for a small company.
    - I use BSI now so you could try them.

Like others have said, many are not taking on new clients, so get quotes per Richard's advice and assess from there.

Thank you, Peter. Appreciate the link. I've used NANDO previously and the number of NB's with capabilities in our focus is limited, e.g. BSI, TUV SUD, DEKRA, Intertek, NSAI.

Thank you, Richard. Yes, this has been my experience thus far. NB's are not taking on new clients due to BREXIT and MDR needs of current customers.

I'm not sure if they have the accreditation for your specific device, but I've used and been happy with TUV USA/NORD in the 3 start-up/small companies I've worked for. Their pricing makes sense and the people they use are capable with good customer service. https://www.tuv-nord.com/us/en/tuv-usa/meet-our-team/

Good luck finding the right partner!

Thank you, Clarisa. TUV USA/NORD didn't show up in the NANDO search I conducted.

    Hi Chris,

You got me curious so I looked them up since I knew they would not have withdrawn: https://ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/nando/index.cfm?fuseaction=notifiedbody.notifiedbody&refe_cd=EPOS%5F43366 NB 0044

That above is the one I used and one of their offices is DBA TUV USA. I know that they've got people trained in MDSAP audits too the last time I talked to them.

    Hello Chris

Strongly recommend when choosing the notified body that you determine: (1) if notified body (NB) covers the scope and (2) the number of either (i) NB experts or (ii) companies falling under the scope at the NB.

Over the last few years, a few manufacturers were left with no notified body since the scope had been suddenly withdrawn. The competent authorities had determined that there were insufficient people falling under the designated scope. One NB had only one person responsible for the scope which was clearly insufficient.

Within each NB, there are departments which are good and practical and other departments covering other scopes which are not. Personally, I have experienced large differences within the same NB.

If you ask around please keep in mind to ask specifically with regards to the scope which your medical devices falls under.

    Best Regards,
    Stephanie
