    Hello,

As per my understanding, any machine which is helping in taking measurements requires calibration and rest of machine which have direct impacts to devices requires maintenance.

Please correct me if I'm wrong

    Thanks

    Hello Anon,

In simple terms probably sounds right, but as you can imagine it depends specifically on the piece of equipment, how it is being used, what process in manufacturing, etc.  If a piece of equipment, instrument, and/or tool are making or providing a measurement, then it would typically be calibrated.  Some tools or instruments may be "qualified" because the measurement or action taken is only a type of verification or check.  Equipment or instruments generally do have a maintenance performed - again depending on the piece of equipment.  Some equipment may not require calibration and some may not require maintenance - if that is the case then rationales can be generated.

In general, Inspection, Measuring, and Test Equipment, IM&TE, requires calibration. This helps assure you can trust the measurement.

Some IM&TE doesn't require calibration because it is not used for quantitative measurements.

A multimeter used by a maintenance person to determine whether voltage is present to not doesn't require calibration.

A multimeter used by a production person to set a reading on a device does require calibration.

Some IM&TE requires maintenance. For example, if the instrument has a fan for cooling it will also have a fan filter which needs periodic cleaning or replacement. This is maintenance.
