  • 1.  Business Acumen Training Recommendations?

    Posted 16-Oct-2017 14:30
    Greetings Colleagues!
There were several recommendations given by top Regulatory leaders at the 2017 RAPS Convergence regarding the Executive Development Program at the Kellogg School of Business at Northeastern U. I think Business Acumen is an area in which I need to hone my skills.  I believe it will make me a much more valuable Regulatory professional to my company if I can understand and speak the language of CEO.  The kicker is that this program is extremely expensive and will not be funded by my small company.
I have provided this feedback to the RAPS Convergence Chairperson for next year, so hopefully Business Acumen presentations and/or workshops will be on the 2018 Convergence Agenda.  But in the meantime, does anyone know of a really well done (and reasonably priced) business acumen training course for Regulatory Affairs professionals?
    Thanks!

Very well said!  I love the idea of adding this critical topic to the 2018 Convergence.  I have run across a couple of articles that speak in generality about the topic. I recently started working on my MBA and had to write a justification as to how  / why business acumen is important to my professional field. With the aggressively changing regulations impacting both domestic and GMA, it is critical we are making decisions that impact our businesses globally!

Yes, a great book I read years ago:
Seeing the Big Picture: Business Acumen to Build Your Credibility, Career, and Company by Kevin Cope
Seeing the Big Picture: Business Acumen to Build Your Credibility, Career, and Company

Also, I find being good at personal finances helps (lots of books on that, including Laura Adams, Jane Bryans Quinn, Dave Barry, etc).

Then there is just reading financial news, like the Wall Street Journal.

Perhaps listening to some good Business podcasts as well.

And finding some good pharma / medical device business blogs to read

Don't necessarily target "Business Skills for Regulatory Professionals" - target business skills period. There are some great ways to do this - to start, take a look at the agenda topics for the Kellogg course or other "mini-MBA" courses (or for that matter full MBA studies). Then embark on tackling these topics. Ideas can include:

    - podcasts & TEDtalks - many offered free on a wide variety of business topics
    - read Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review - HBR has some online content free and subscriptions are not too crazy - plus you might find one to borrow at a library or from a current executive
    - HBR press has many good books on basic topics - finance, marketing, strategy, leadership etc
    - scour used books stores for business books - they usually have entire sections
    - see if you can find a free online class - you'd be shocked how many MOOCs or similar things there are out there

You are smart enough to figure out how all these skills fit with regulatory affairs skills you already have.

I would suggest doing mini business courses that go over all the parts of business. One of my recommendations is "Business foundations course" on Coursera offered by UPenn

    Business Foundations | Coursera

    Business Foundations | Coursera
In this Specialization, you'll develop basic literacy in the language of business, which you can use to transition to a new career, start or improve your own small business, or apply to business school to continue your education. In five courses, you'll learn the fundamentals of marketing, accounting, operations, and finance.
