Hi!  I have been in RA for many years.  Recently, I have begun receiving tons of RA related spam from consulting organizations, from headhunters, etc.  Not only do I get e-mail spam, but some company called "Alcoo" (?) just called me on my personal cell phone from a blocked number offering RA consulting services.  My personal cell phone is not online anywhere.

What is the source of this spam, which is all regulatory-related?

Only recently, I started attending RAPS online learning events, mainly as I need to attend some in order to maintain my RAC certification.  I remember a disclaimer stating (I think) that the organization hosting the event receives a list of email addresses of attendees.  I am concerned that this may be the source of all the spam, although I am being contacted by companies that never hosted an event.

You also have to be very careful about the signup details in some instances.  Sometimes the statement comes with a disclaimer that also allows the sponsor to share your information within any part of their company and with affiliates and even with "outside partners" who can include just about anyone on the face of the earth.

So far I haven't seen anything like that come from RAPS or from anything I signed up to take through RAPS but it honestly could be from anywhere.  Have you ever visited a site that required you to sign up for "an account"?  Or have you maybe spoken to someone at a conference previously that you might have given a business card out to (pre-COVID)?  Or it even could have been from a well-intentioned colleague or friend who heard about this great new consulting company that does all of this amazing stuff and they decided to "help you out".  Or worse, never diminish the power of social engineering where a person from that company calls someone (anyone!) in your company looking to find out who manages regulatory compliance and your colleague at work simply decides that the issue is just too important not to reply to or to get their information and offer to pass it along so rather than hesitating or seeming like they are non-responsive to a caller they provide your information.

    Hello

Unfortunately, spam has become a constant feature of our life! My approach is to simply ignore it, mart it as junk and block the sender (or caller). This obviously does not work since spam keeps coming.

I get a lot of spam but have signed up for a lot of free feeds, since I am solo.

ALKU is one of the most annoying "recruiting" firms. I get at least one call or e-mail each week about how an ALKU representative thought I would be ideal for this role, blah, blah blah.

When you look at their recruiters, they are just out of college, with a history or psychology major, maybe 3 months as a recruiter.  I feel like this is a multi-level marketing scheme. There was a time I spoke with them years ago, but the recruiters have no experience typically in our industry and thus, no idea what RA even does.  Don't be sucked in to contract work with them.

My pet peeve was Seven Resourcing Limited.  They kept changing domain names and thus evading any filters I would set.  After several requests to remove my personal information from their database, I reported them to a European regulator for violations of GDPR (Seven is based, or has affiliates in Europe).  Amazingly, they took action and the solicitations stopped.

One of the few positives of the otherwise excessive GDPR.

Very interesting Ted! I too currently have the same issue with them and cannot get them to stop! I believe they are based out of the UK (last time I checked) but I may have to take further action. Thanks for the tip - it's greatly appreciated!

Just to update this thread, "Alcoo" just called my cell phone (again).  They always spoof local numbers.

While I had seen @Ginger Cantor's post back when I posted this, I didn't make the connection until I reread it just now that "Alcoo" was the infamous "ALKU."  Although I get spammed by ALKU on LinkedIn like everyone else, I had always misread "ALKU" as "ack-loo" and not "al-coo."  :)

After all these years, I finally figured out that "Alcoo" is "ALKU," the same company that, as Ginger says above, spams everyone on LinkedIn.  Still not sure how they got my personal cell...probably off some shady site that sells data.
